Let's talk about genome editing!
Image
What does the public think about the new genome editing technology CRISPR and how should we talk about it? The ORION project has organised public dialogues in the Czech Republic, Germany, Sweden and the UK to find out. The aim of the public dialogues was to discuss the risks and opportunities of this disruptive technology and identify any concerns the public might have.

Eternal life through genome editing?
Image
If there was a medicine that could stop physical ageing – would you take it? Artist Emilia Tikka’s installation, which was showcased recently at the Swedish National Museum of Science and Technology in Stockholm, uses this idea to stage a vision of the future. The artwork is the result of her collaboration with researchers in the field of genome editing.

In short
How to run a public dialogue, Lund
Maria Hagardt of VA met with the CRISPRIdeas team at The Pufendorf Institute for Advanced Studies in Lund on 5 March. At the interdisciplinary institute researchers work together on problems across subject and faculty boundaries.

Berlin Open Science Barcamp & Conference
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the second day of the Open Science Barcamp & conference 11-12 March was held online. Emma Harris of MDC presented lessons learned from the ORION Open Science training in her talk: "Three golden rules of Open Science training".

Lab phase underway!
After months of testing with data already published, the Genigma game project has started the experiments in the laboratory. The aim of the project is to develop an app to discover the genomic alterations in cancer cells. In this important step, researchers will extract DNA from the cancer cells that will be analyzed during the game. The Genigma Citizen Science project is financed by ORION.

About ORION Open Science
The EU-funded ORION Open Science project aims to explore ways in which research performing and research funding organisations in life sciences and biomedicine can open up the way they fund, organise and do research. We will embed Open Science principles in the research process and involve citizens, policy makers and researchers in co-creation experiments, public dialogues, training and citizen science.

Find out more how you can get involved in the ORION project at our website. Don't miss to tune in for our Open Science Podcasts!
