H2020 project: Empowering youth, co-creating social innovations and policymaking through youth citizen social science.
About us
YouCount is a project funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. Through YouCount we aim to address one of Europe’s most pressing challenges: How to increase social inclusion for young people? How do people experience social inclusion? From previous studies we know that social inclusion is experienced when three main criteria are met: participation, belonging and citizenship. But do young people understand social inclusion that way? They may agree that participating in social life in a meaningful way or feeling connected to others are important, but there may be other dimensions of social inclusion that are relevant for them. Young people also know better than anyone else, what their daily lived experiences of inclusion and exclusion are. That is why our research team includes young citizen scientists participating as young co-researchers in the project. Throughout the project they will contribute with their own knowledge on social inclusion and co-create, together with policy makers, community leaders and other relevant actors in their own communities and regions, new knowledge and innovations that contribute to increase social inclusion in practice. Young co-researchers will participate in the project through hands on citizen science. Citizen science involves researchers and young co-researchers creating local living labs, doing interviews, developing dialogue forums, organising local and national workshops and using and app specifically created to gather and share daily lived experiences of inclusion and exclusion. It also involves co-evaluating our impact and how co-created citizen social science worked across the cases as well as within each case. We call this type of research Youth Citizen Science.

YouCount sent out its final newsletter where it continued to travel to one of the cases, to introduce young citizen scientists and to inform about previous events. Click on the link below for the online version 📰 During the past months, project members have been busy closing the cases and starting to get an overview of all the findings. Many YouCount countries organised a national workshop with their young citizen scientists inviting stakeholders that were involved in the case. On an international level, the project had two virtual events, the final Consortium Meeting and final webinar where youth shared their experiences. 💡 Last but certainly not least, YouCount celebrated its work at the final conference in Brussels this month that featured a hybrid exhibition and workshop. 🙌 But YouCount is not done yet! During the next weeks, its members will publish reports, scientific papers and blog posts on the resource section of the website to distribute results and findings. 🤓 Look out for YouCount's handbook and toolkit! YouCount reposted this
This week H2020 YouCount project, coordinated by Reidun Norvoll from OsloMet – Oslo Metropolitan University, organized a hands-on workshops and a final #conference in Brussels, engaging youth, researchers, policymakers, representatives from non-governmental organizations and other projects into discussion on #citizenscience as a tool for #socialinclusion and #socialinnovations. I was happy to present theoretical framework of our project and act as a moderator of the session “Youth citizen social science contributing to social inclusion and innovation”. Lithuanian team including Egle Vaidelyte and Audrone Pauliukeviciute presented work of Lithuanian case. It was an exciting 3-years research journey to involve youth in hands-on citizen science activities and we were happy to share results with broader CS community.
