The importance of knowing your limits

Emmanuelle Charpentier offers an insight into receiving professional criticism and finding support to carry on. “Something important for success is to also listen to oneself. Know your limits and try to push your limits, but know as well how to define and understand what may be your strengths and where you might be too focused on the weaknesses.”

Charpentier shared the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Jennifer Doudna for discovering one of gene technology’s sharpest tools: the CRISPR/Cas9 genetic scissors. Using these genetic scissors, researchers can edit the genome of practically all living things. Read more about their discovery

“Nobody teaches you this...”

In this video, Bruce Beutler talks about how he struggled to exercise leadership in his lab. “I didn’t do it very well, to be frank. I thought I could be friends with everyone in my lab. That didn’t work well.”

Beutler shares how he learned how to make decisions – and tells us about the book that helped him. Beutler shared the 2011 medicine prize with Jules Hoffman and Ralph Steinman for contributing to our understanding of how so-called receptors detect microorganisms and activate our innate immunity. “If you learned something from it, it’s not a failure”

Watch Carolyn Bertozzi’s advice to students on overcoming failures in the lab. Bertozzi also shares what she was like as a student and her favourite science-themed reads.

Bertozzi was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2022 for her work with bioorthogonal reactions which take place inside living organisms without disrupting the normal chemistry of the cell. These reactions are now used to explore cells, track biological processes, and improve the targeting of cancer pharmaceuticals. Read more about Bertozzi's work

“The most beautiful secret in literature”

László Krasznahorkai explains how he was introduced to the work of Franz Kafka as a child, and how that sparked his interest in literature. He says that without Kafka, he would never have become a writer.

The fate of the refugee

Five years ago, this laureate was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. The theme of the refugee’s disruption runs throughout his work. His novel By The Sea begins with these lines: “I speak to maps. And sometimes they say something back to me. This is not as strange as it sounds, nor is it an unheard of thing.” What is the laureate’s name?
