Nobel Week is coming up
2018 Nobel Prize award ceremonies
The new Nobel Laureates take center stage on 10 December in Stockholm and Oslo, where the 12 laureates will receive their Nobel Prizes and enjoy the Nobel Banquets afterwards. Nobelprize.org will provide live-streams of the Nobel Lectures and the award ceremonies, as well as photos and interviews with the laureates. The activities start on 6 December - also on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram.

The Nobel Week begins

Since 1901, the Nobel Prizes have been presented to laureates at award ceremonies. The laureates come from various parts of the world to Stockholm or Oslo to collect their prizes. This archive video clip shows author and literature laureate Grazia Deledda and her husband, Palmiro Madesani, after they visited the headquarters of the Italian Diplomatic mission at Oakhill in Djurgården, Stockholm, during Nobel Week 1927.

During Nobel Week, the Nobel Laureates give their official Nobel Lectures, which describe the history and background of their discoveries, literature or prize-awarded work. Literature laureate Kazuo Ishiguro talked about the importance of literature.

"Mommy, Mommy, I won a prize!"
Literature laureate J. M. Coetzee.
One unexpected duty that new Nobel Laureates may find awaiting them during the Nobel Week in Stockholm is the requirement to give an after-dinner speech at the Nobel Banquet on 10 December. J. M. Coetzee, literature laureate 2003, took the opportunity to remember his parents in his banquet speech.

Celebrating Marie Curie's 151st birthday
Marie Curie.
Marie Sklodowska Curie was born in Poland on 7 November 1867. Through her outstanding scientific contributions and her unpretentious manner, she became one of the most admired personalities of her time. Her discoveries in the field of radioactivity were the beginning of a better understanding of the structure of the atom. She is the first Nobel Prize awarded woman and the only one to have received the prize in physics as well as chemistry.
